Institute Of Palliative Care
  Along with the functioning of an OP in the old district hospital building, Thrissur during the year 2006, a training Institute was also set up to give necessary training to Doctors, Nurses and Volunteers to equip them to work in areas of Palliative care, medicines and treatment. Various training courses are conducted in this Institute regularly.
They are;

1. Basic Certificate Course in Palliative Medicine for Doctors – 6 weeks
2. Basic Certificate Course in Palliative Nursing – 6 weeks
3. Basic Certificate Course in Palliative Auxiliary Nursing – 12 weeks
4. Certificate Course in Essentials of Palliative Care - 8 weeks.
5. Hands on training course for Doctors – 10 days
6. Training course for to volunteers – 2 days
7. Periodic Refresher Courses for doctors, nurses and volunteers

The Institute has now been approved by the Govt. of Kerala for training in palliative care. This is also one among the few centres recognized by the Indian Association of Palliative Care for its Certificate Course. Our Society is an authorised centre for MSW Students for their block field work placement.

Institute of Palliative Care is a collaborating centre of Institute of Palliative Medicine which is a demonstration project of World Health Organization.
Institute of Palliative Care was set up with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Thrissur Central.
We give below details of various training courses and the links to download the applications for admission. It may be noted that application forms are not available for Volunteers' Training course; as such please submit applications on plain paper giving all relevant details.

Details of the Training Programs:

A) BASIC CERTIFICATE COURSE IN PALLIATIVE MEDICINE (BCCPM)
    
     A six-week intensive training program in palliative care for doctors
a. Provides hands-on training in symptom management and communication skills.
b. Introduces trainees to a range of methods of palliative care delivery -outpatients, inpatients, homecare and link centers.
c. Includes lectures by specialists from the field, assignments, presentations and project preparation and assessments.
d. Candidates to maintain a logbook during the course.
e. Evaluation is carried out by the candidates, their peers and the faculty.
Course fee is Rs. 7,500 (Rupees seven thousand five hundred only)
Food and Accommodation will be the candidate’s own responsibility; but the institution will offer all possible assistance including subsidized accommodation at the Institute of Palliative Care if available.

B)
 BASIC CERTIFICATE COURSE IN PALLIATIVE NURSING (BCCPN)

Structure And Delivery:
Nurses holding a recognised degree or certificate in nursing and are interested in palliative care are eligible to apply. During the course the student spends approximately 144 hours in clinical experience and 72 hours in theory. The clinical will include Home Care (both locally and at link centers) plus Hospice and Clinic work. The student is expected to spend at least 10 hours per week going through background material.
Evaluation of light assignments, case presentations and topic presentations which together carries 60% of total marks is done jointly by the student, peer and faculty. The final examination carries 40% of the total marks. The student is given a certificate if she or he secures 50% marks. Reflective journal is required, but not graded. 

Course fee is Rs.5,000 (Rupees five thousand only)

C) CERTIFICATE COURSE IN ESSENTIALS OF PALLIATIVE CARE

A Course conducted by Indian Association of Palliative Care. The Certificate Course in Essentials of Palliative Care has two components. Part A is intended to build the theoretical base and includes 8 weeks of distance learning and introductory session in the beginning followed by a contact session of 15 hours. There will be an evaluation at the end and successful candidates will be awarded Certificates in Essentials of Palliative Care. Part B of the Course is 10 days of optional clinical placement at Pain and Palliative Care Clinic. The Certificate awarded to candidates successfully completing this clinical component of the course will enable them to apply for license to stock and dispense oral morphine under the modified Narcotic Rule. 
The Course Fee: A heavily subsidized course fee of Rs 1000/- only is being charged. This will cover the training fee, course materials and examination fee only.

D) AUXILLIARY NURSES TRAINING IN PALLIATIVE CARE

The Course is meant for females who have passed S.S.L.C. and also have completed two years' Nursing Assistants Course or Junior Public Health Nurse (JPHN) Course. The duration of the course is 3 months. The course consists of the following;
Developing communication skills, Care of bedridden patients and Hands on training in Nursing skills.
The course fee is Rs. 5000/-. Travel, accommodation and food will have to be borne by the student or those who sponsor them.

EHANDS ON TRAINING FOR DOCTORS.

An intensive training course conducted simultaneously in palliative medicine with theory and clinical placement. Exposure to outpatient clinic, inpatient unit and home care visits. The course consists of brief theory session and clinical work along with case presentation and evaluation at the end of the day, every day. On tenth day, certificate will be issued to those who have successfully completed the course. This course is the minimum mandatory requirement for holding a recognized Medical Institution (R.M.I.) as stipulated by the Drugs Controller. Only R.M.I.s can purchase, store and dispense oral morphine tablets. The fee is Rs. 2000/-.

General information:

BCCPM and BCCPN: These are the basic courses designed for the doctors and nurses respectively to deliver the comprehensive aspects of
Palliative Care

1.     The course commences on the first working day of alternate months and spreads over 45 days (inclusive of Sundays)
2.     The candidates selected for the course have  to spend 5 days a week (between Monday and Saturday ) at the institute (9.30 am – 4.30 pm for theory sessions and 9.00 am to 4.30 pm for clinical sessions)
3.     There will be theory sessions, clinical postings (OP/IP – includes 3 night duties/Homecare), hands on training, group or assignment  discussions &topic and case presentations covering various palliative care aspects as part of the course.
4.     Attendance is compulsory for theory sessions. The candidate may avail leave for a maximum of 2 days with proper  intimation to the coordinator.
5.     There will be continuous evaluation during the course in terms of punctuality, attitude, skills acquired and team work.
6.     There will be a mid-term evaluation at the end of 2/3 weeks and a final evaluation at the end of the course
7.     The candidate has to secure 50% marks for a pass in each division – theory, communication skills, practical cum viva voce, case presentation, topic presentation etc.

TEN DAYS HANDS ON TRAINING IN PALLIATIVE MEDICINE

This is a hands on training program for doctors who have completed their graduation (MBBS/BDS). This is done on need based manner. The course duration is 10 days which can be stretched upto a period of one month. The course enables the attending doctor to learn basics of palliative care and procure license for dispensing Morphine from his/her institution. There will be theory sessions and clinical exposure in OP, IP and Home care settings. The candidate has to maintain a logbook of the activities during the training period. The evaluation is continuous and includes patient assessment and case discussions.
BCCPAN
This course is aimed at equipping a non professional person to deliver good quality Palliative Care services to the patients and their family members in a community setting. The course is designed according to the instructions by Arogyakeralam Palliative Care Project.
CCEPC
Certificate Course in Essentials of Palliative Care (CCEPC) is common course for doctors and nurses, designed by Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC). The course is uniformly delivered across the country and is essentially a distance learning programme with 2/3 days of contact session.
