Institute of Palliative Care : - Simultaneously with the functioning of OP in 2006, in Old District Hospital Building a Training Institute was set up to give necessary training to Doctors, Nurses and Volunteers to equip them to work in the different areas of Palliative medicines, care and treatment. Different training courses are conducted regularly in the Institute. They are:

1. Basic Certificate Course in Palliative Medicine

2. Basic Certificate Course in Palliative Nursing

3. Basic Certificate Course in Palliative Auxiliary Nursing

4. Certificate Course in Essential of Palliative Care

5. Two week training to Nurses / Doctors*

6. Two day training to Volunteers

7. Periodic Refreshers courses for doctors, nurses and volunteers

*sponsored by Govt. of Kerala, Health and Family Welfare Dept. to train personnel for delivery of  palliative care through primary health centers.

Details of the Training Programs:

A) BASIC CERTIFICATE COURSE IN PALLIATIVE MEDICINE (BCCPM)
     A six-week intensive training program in palliative care for doctors

• Provides hands-on training in symptom management and communication skills.

• Introduces trainees to a range of methods of palliative care delivery, as outpatients, inpatients, homecare, and in link centers.

• Includes lectures by specialists in the field, assignments, presentations and project preparation and assessments.

• Candidates maintain a logbook during the course.

• Evaluation is carried out by the candidates, their peers and the faculty.

B) BASIC CERTIFICATE COURSE IN PALLIATIVE NURSING (BCCPN)

Course Structure And Delivery:

Any nurse holding a recognised degree or certificate in nursing and interested in palliative care is eligible to do the course. During the course the student spends approximately 144 hours in clinical experience and 72 hours in theory. The clinical will include Home Care (both locally and at link centers), plus Hospice and Clinic work. The student is expected to spend at least 10 hours per week going through background material.

Evaluation:

Evaluation of light assignments, case presentations and topic presentations which together carries 60% of total marks is done jointly by self (student), peer and faculty. The final examination carries 40% of the total marks. The student is given a certificate is she or he secures 50%. Reflective journal is required, but not graded. 

Course fee is Rs. 3,000 (Rupees three thousand only) approx. $60

C) CERTIFICATE COURSE IN ESSENTIALS OF PALLIATIVE CARE

A Course run by Indian Association of Palliative Care. The Certificate Course in Essentials of Palliative Care have two components. Part A intended to build the theoretical base. Part A has 8 weeks of distant learning and introductory session in the beginning followed by a contact session of 15 hours. There will be an evaluation at the end and successful candidates will be awarded the Certificates in Essentials of Palliative Care. Part B of the Course is 10 days of optional clinical placement at Pain and Palliative Care Clinic. The Certificate awarded to candidates successfully completing this clinical component of the course will enable them to apply for license to stock and dispense oral morphine under the modified Narcotic Rule. 

The Course Fee:

A heavily subsidized course fee of Rs 1000/- will be charged. This will cover the training fee, course material and examination fee.

D) AUXILLIARY NURSES TRAINING IN PALLIATIVE CARE

The Course is meant for females who have passed S.S.L.C. with some work experience in hospitals or those who have completed plus two with any subject. The duration of the course is 3 months. The course consists in developing communication skills, care of bedridden patients and hands on training in nursing skills. There is no course fee. Travel and accommodation will have to be borne by the student or those who sponsor.
